THE most dominant senior boys’ volleyball team in the country added another accolade to their résumé while the senior girls featured a repeat champion after a weekend of competition between the top programmes.

The Government High School Magic emerged as senior boys champions while the Agape Christian School Eagles won the senior girls’ division at the 2018 National High School Volleyball Championships, presented by JS Johnson Insurance Agents and Brokers Ltd.

Three days on the court culminated in Saturday night’s finale at the Anatol Rodgers Gymnasium.

The Magic defeated the Eagles in straight sets 25-16 25-23. GHS captured the GSSA championship with an undefeated record. They also completed nationals with another undefeated run and did not surrender a set through the entire tournament.

The senior girls championship featured a rematch of last year’s final match and produced the same result as the Eagles defeated the CV Bethel Stingrays.

Agape took the match in three sets 25-17, 20-25, 15-8.

The Eagles’ Clanae Davis was named MVP, and carried home both the best spiker and best scorer awards. Deanna Mcdonald took home best server, and Summer Sands took home best setter awards.

Agape also completed their fourth consecutive undefeated season.

“It’s been a great run over the last four years, we have done a lot together, God has truly blessed us,” head coach Stephan Johnson said on social media, “I’m so blessed to be a part of each and every one of their lives and I’m extremely proud of these girls. They have all improved as players over the course of the season, and I’m excited to want God’s plan is for our future! Continue to soar and always remember to keep God First.”

Johnson also had words of encouragement for his senior boys teams as the Eagles became the first programme to have two teams in the finals.

“They had a great showing at the tournament and made it a lot further then most people would have anticipated,” he said.

A total of 20 teams participated in the event as the High School National Championship series for the academic year continues.

Boys teams included St. Augustine’s College (BAISS champions), St. John’s College (BAISS runners-up), Government High School (GSSSA champions), Doris Johnson (GSSSA runners-up), Teleos (BSAA champions), North Eleuthera, Patrick J Bethel, Jack Hayward, St. George’s and Agape Christian.

Girls teams included St. John’s College (BAISS champions), Kingsway Academy (BAISS runners-up), CV Bethel (GSSSA champions), Anatol Rodgers (GSSSA runners-up), Teleos (BSAA champions), CI Gibson, Agape Christian, St. George’s, Bishop Michael Eldon and Gateway Christian Academy.

In 2017, the National Championships were hosted in Grand Bahama at the St. George’s Gymnasium, void of the BAISS programs. Agape won their first national title in senior girls play while the CI Gibson Rattlers were the senior boys champions with a win over the CC Sweeting Cobras.
