Raptors take early lead

The 27th Annual GSSSA Track and Field Championships got underway yesterday and continued its format with both junior schools and senior schools competing simultaneously.

The CH Reeves Raptors have taken an early lead in their bid to regain the title among juniors.

The Raptors total of 295 points leads the AF Adderley Tigers who are in second with 211 points.

The SC McPherson Sharks are third with 139, the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves are fourth with 134 points while the HO Nash Lions rounded out the top five with 128 points. LW Young Golden Eagles scored 101, The TA Thompson Scorpions posted 85 and the DW Davis Royals rounded out the field with 67 points.

Several field events and final points standings for the Senior division of the meet were unavailable up to press time last night.

Individually, the 100m, 400m, 1,200m and 1500m were contested on the track with a number of events on the field to conclude the first day. The 4x100m relay final was also contested.

In the Under-14 Girls, Katranel Dean of AF Adderley was one of the top performenrs on the afternoon. She repeated as 100m champion in 13.95 seconds.

In Under-14 Boys, Finleey Etienne of the CH Reeves Raptors also returned to take first place in the 100m in 13.16. SC McPherson’s Shanton St Germain won multiple events in the Boys’ U-14 division. He took first place in the 400m in 1:00.01 and the 1,200m in 4:04.55.

A’Karee Roberts of LW Young also won both events in the U-14 Girls. She took the 400m in 1:04.32 and the 1,200m in a new meet record time of 4:26.70.

Aliyah Brown of CH Reeves won the U-16 Girls 100m in 13.34 and returned to win the 400m in 1:03.53.

In the field, Kenyce Scavella of HO Nash won a pair of events in the field in the U-16 division.

Scavella won the shot put with a throw of 9.48m and the discus with a throw from 23.31m.

In the field among seniors, Sheronika Simeon of CR Walker surpassed her own meet record in the U-17 Girls High Jump at a mark of 1.47m.

The meet continues 9am this morning at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium.

In 2019, the Raptors concluded the two-day meet with 508 points, a 67.5-point margin over then defending champions AF Adderley Tigers, who ended up with 440.50 points.

The Raptors have seen their winning streak of four consecutive meets come to an end at the hand of the Tigers in 2018, but have won four of the last five meet titles.

The last school to win other than the two powerhouses was the LW Young Golden Eagles in 2012.
