A 27-year-old man who was caught driving during the weekend lockdown with an assortment of building supplies he could not give an account for was fined $800 yesterday.

Police arrested Wusvel Mytil after they found him on Shirley Street around 6am on Sunday, November 1. He was accused of dishonestly receiving nine bundles of shingles, over $100 worth of tiles and three window screens that morning. The prosecution alleged the items were taken from Robert Baker’s warehouse at #68 Shirley Street.

Mytil pleaded guilty to receiving and violating the curfew during a hearing before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain yesterday.

The prosecution said that morning, officers observed Mytil driving a silver coloured Passo along Shirley Street. When they beckoned for him to stop, they noticed the accused had shingles, tiles and window screens in his car. When they questioned him about the items, he could not give a “satisfactory account” of how he came about the supplies. As a result, he was arrested and taken to the Central Detective Unit. In an interview with police there, he admitted to the offences and was subsequently charged.

During the hearing, Mytil was represented by attorney Kevoon Maynard. He told the magistrate his client was a father of three who was the primary caretaker of his family. He also said the accused “accepted the errors of his ways” and understood the decision he made was “reckless”.

After listening to Mr Maynard’s plea in mitigation, Magistrate Swain accepted Mytil’s guilty pleas and fined him $500 or three months in prison for dishonestly receiving the building supplies. She also fined him $300 or 30 days for violating the curfew. Both sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
