A 22-year-old man who said he smoked marijuana to get “a good sleep at night” must attend drug counselling classes for a year to avoid spending six months behind bars.

He pleaded guilty to one count of simple possession during his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

Police arrested Secil Adderley after they found eight grams of Indian hemp on him on April 22.

During the hearing, Adderley told the magistrate he bought the marijuana for his personal use but hid the joints when he saw the officers approaching him because he was afraid. He also said he only bought the drugs because he got a “good sleep at night” after smoking marijuana as the hallucinogen “put him to bed”.

After listening to his explanation, Magistrate Forbes granted the defendant a conditional discharge on the agreement he would attend drug counselling for 12 months. He warned him if he failed to comply with the conditions of his release, he would be sentenced to six months in prison.
