Social media and COVID

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Speaking as a senior when we were younger we got all our information/news from TV and radio. Within the community respected figures such as doctors were listened to and importantly believed. The news outlets were not as polarized as they are now. They told the news and gave facts. With the advent of the world wide web social media is now how people, particularly younger people, get their news and therefore their opinions. There is zero monitoring of the veracity of anything posted on social media. Anyone can post anything they like. Social media is flooding the internet with contradictory news on COVID. Consequently people are being fed some truth and lots of lies and deceits. What should you believe what’s true what’s a lie?

We know COVID exists and it’s out there a real thing. People here are now seeing friends and family dying from this horrific disease. However they are bombarded by false information flooding their smart phones. The vaccine will kill you it will plant a microchip in you so Bill Gates can control the world! This is all madness, but people believe it. Some people have a mentality that feeds on conspiracy theory regardless of how irrational and crazy the theory is. I would recommend people follow the advice of the experts, doctors, epidemiologists. These people are trained scientists who actually understand the disease. Believe respected news outlets that are impartial if you can find one. Social media is killing people make no mistake. People here and all over the world who are not taking the vaccine are gambling with their very lives.

It’s like playing Russian roulette with a loaded gun. 99.5% of the people dying of COVID in USA hospitals are not vaccinated. This is not an opinion it’s purely factual. I had 18 vaccines or thereabouts given to me when I was a child, I had no say in the matter our parents took us they believed the experts. Because of this faith smallpox has been wiped out, polio is all but eradicated. This is directly due to the widespread world wide use of vaccines for those two diseases. I now have 19 vaccines in my body having received the two COVID jabs. This has given me peace of mind as I know even if I get COVID I won’t die. It’s no different to buying insurance you need it just in case. The facts are simple get the vaccine get the insurance. I don’t know what can be done with social media but it’s killing thousands of people by spreading false information and surely society has the right to protect its citizens somehow or other?
