Wells: Vaccine will be in the country by end of the week

MINISTER of Health Renward Wells says the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine will be in the country by the end of this week.

He said the roll out of jabs could start “as early as next week” but he will leave the announcement about the details to Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis.

“We’re looking at sort of the end of the week as was intimated by the deputy prime minister. . .it is good news,” Mr Wells said before heading into a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. “What would make it even better news is when the vaccine lands, that the Bahamian people avail themselves of it to the maximum possible use. We want the Bahamian people vaccinated because we want our economy open, we want the Bahamian people safe.”

On Sunday, Dr Minnis made a strong appeal for all citizens to take the COVID-19 vaccine, insisting the country’s economic rebound hinged on widespread administration of the jab.

In a nationally televised address, Dr Minnis said when a large percentage of Bahamians are vaccinated, more of the country will be able to open up, adding this would spark more jobs among other economic positives.

the " roll out of jabs", wow, why are we parrots? we have never referred to needle sticks as jabs. let us do it our way. imagine telling a child or adult that ', we have to jab you , now". that is archaic talk not modern day civility

"A promising Australian candidate for a coronavirus vaccine has been abandoned after trial participants returned false HIV positive results.

Australia had previously agreed to buy 51 million doses of the vaccine being developed by Australian firm CSL and the University of Queensland (UQ).

The government said orders of other vaccines would now fill the shortfall.

CSL and UQ stressed that the positive results were false - meaning trial participants' health was not at risk."

On 8 September 2020, AstraZeneca announced a global halt to the vaccine trial while a possible adverse reaction in a participant in the United Kingdom was investigated.[33][34][35] On 13 September, AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford resumed clinical trials in the United Kingdom after regulators concluded it was safe to do so.[36] AstraZeneca was criticised for vaccine safety after concerns from experts noting the company's refusal to provide details about serious neurological illnesses in two participants who received the experimental vaccine in Britain.[37] While the trial resumed in the UK, Brazil, South Africa, Japan[38] and India, it remained on pause in the US till 23 October 2020[39] while the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated a patient illness that triggered the clinical hold, according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar.[40]

On 15 October 2020, Dr João Pedro R. Feitosa, a 28-year-old doctor from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, who received a placebo instead of the test vaccine in a clinical trial of AZD1222, died from COVID-19 complications.[41][42][43] The Brazilian health authority Anvisa announced that the trial would continue in Brazil.[44]"
