No one above law

EDITOR, The Tribune.

It is very rare that I write to the newspapers regarding matters of current events. But I do so today as a Bahamian with a sense of responsibility and concern for my beloved country.

I have read the press reports regarding the contribution made in the House of Assembly by the Hon Phillip “Brave” Davis on the extension of the Emergency Powers Regulations.

Without being partisan, the comments are spot on.

It is very serious that the Prime Minister, “The Competent Authority”, has trampled on one of the most serious requirements of the Regulations by failing to submit reports to Parliament that detail the expenditures, suppliers for the goods and services procured and the reasons those suppliers were chosen.

In my opinion it is a dereliction of duty by the Prime Minister and he should know that persons have resigned for far lesser abuses of their official powers.

It cannot be that he is too busy to do so. He and his entourage have been flouting his own Emergency Regulations by flying up and down The Bahamas for beach walks and what looks suspiciously like campaigning, even though he’s using our tax dollars to travel.

The Bahamian people must demand an explanation from the Prime Minister. He broke every promise he ever made about accountability so we cannot trust him to hold himself to account. We must do it ourselves.

Our lenders and external partners are watching and must, understandably, be concerned.

In Greek mythology, there is a well-known adage, He whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad. There is no question in my mind that the Competent Authority has been made mad!
