A 33-year-old woman who claimed she hit her spouse during an argument in an act of self-defence was yesterday placed on a year’s probation.

The woman, whose name has been withheld to protect her identity, pleaded guilty to one count of causing harm just before her lawyer explained that she had been a victim of domestic abuse on multiple occasions.

The court was told that around 4.30pm on the day in question, the complainant and his wife got into a verbal argument at their home. The prosecution said during the argument, the accused grabbed a metal object and hit her husband across his left eye which wounded him. After he requested police action, the woman was taken into custody, where she admitted the offence.

During the arraignment her attorney told Magistrate Algernon Allen, Jr, that his client and the complainant had been married for three years but were in a “tumultuous” relationship.

The lawyer said the woman had filed a complaint against her husband both locally and internationally on two separate occasions and added that on the day in question, she hit him with a part from a grill because she was being choked.

After listening to his plea in mitigation, Magistrate Allen, Jr, said he considered the fact that the complainant’s injuries were not serious and the fact that the accused had no antecedents. He subsequently placed the accused on probation for a year on the agreement that she would be of good behaviour. He warned her that if she were convicted of an offence within that time frame, she could risk spending three months on remand.
