Hypocrisy at best?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The current Prime Minister while in opposition spoke heavily about corruption and bigotry within the Progressive Liberal Party. In fact, he campaigned to stand and stamp out chauvinism in politics. He championed creating good governance, accountability, and transparency. He said himself that he would hold his cabinet and members of his party feet to the fire; should they cross lines they will be dealt with.

While he was in the opposition, I can recall how he was ranting and raving for the removal of a cabinet minister for being included in corruption as well as soliciting contracts for his company. The Prime Minister was outraged. His words were that a cabinet minister must ensure that no conflict arises or appears to arise between their duties in the office and their private interests. Hence why he campaigned on “accountability.” In all of this, he accosted the former Prime Minister as an accomplice because of his silence in the matter.

Recently, it was brought to light that the Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Corporation had awarded not just his fiancée contracts but his campaign general too. These contracts summing up to nearly half a million dollars. With all of the media scrutiny and evidence, the Prime Minister has not yet said anything, nor asked the Chairman for his resignation as he did with Peter Turnquest who was the then Deputy Prime Minister at that time.

How can you champion for good governance and accountability when those that are in your party appear also to be participating in what you lobbied against? In my opinion this is hypocrisy at its best. In my opinion the Prime Minister has been playing on the emotions of the Bahamian people from day one.

I heard political commentator on a talk show state that the Bahamian electorate has demonstrated high tolerance for contract bonanzas.

So, why not?
