Union vote gimmick

EDITOR, The Tribune.

They were overjoyed that the National Congress of Trade Unions and the Trade Union Congress had signed a memorandum of understanding committing the PLP, on becoming the government, of ensuring that all long standing union issues would be resolved and the united unions would continue in the best interest of the workers.

No sooner had the announcement been made and the rejoicing started than it was realized that the most important unions knew nothing about it. No reason was given for them being left out of the grand secret that was presented as having been signed with the PLP in the best interest of all unionists.

However, those who participated in the big secret were jubilant that it was signed at last and all they had to do as a part of the agreement was help the PLP become the government. The PLP Leader assured his followers that the signing was not a “gimmick” for votes. Well you certainly could have fooled me – all I see here is another grand “gimmick” to fool Bahamians into wasting their ballot!

It seems to me that Mr Davis’ final statement says it all. “Today we are here,” he said, “and we signed a precatory agreement with the two umbrella unions signaling the unification of labour as well.”

As for you, enthusiastic unionists, do you know what you have signed? Do you know the meaning of the word precatory? A precatory agreement is one that can be changed to suit the occasion. There is nothing binding about it. It is a lot of noise in the market place. And should the PLP win, the unions have a worthless precatory agreement – nothing set in stone, just another issue to squabble over when unionists come to demand their pound of flesh only to find that there is no flesh on the union bone!

Wake up Bahamians! When you go to the polls this time, try to understand what you are voting for.
