Davis wants police probe of fake documents

AN attorney for Progressive Liberal Party leader Philip “Brave” Davis has written to Commissioner of Police Paul Rolle requesting an investigation into “scandalous” and “defamatory” documents circulated on social media this week.

“In the midst of the current campaign, it has come to our client’s attention that certain scandalous and defamatory documents . . . are being spread throughout social media,” Owen Wells of McKinney Turner & Co wrote.

On Tuesday, documents were spread on social media naming Mr Davis, his wife and a PLP supporter and containing purported bank statements. Some of the bank statements misspelled Mr Davis’ wife’s first name. The documents alleged Mr Davis was under a US Federal Bureau of Investigation probe for alleged acts while he was minister of works.

“It is our clients’ view that the false and malicious attack on their character is intended/designed to influence undecided voters and to impact the outcome of the general election,” Mr Wells wrote.

He said the false documents represent a breach of the Penal Code and requested a police investigation to determine who created the documents and disseminated them online. He said his clients want police to take the necessary steps to prosecute those responsible for criminal libel or any other appropriate charges after an investigation.

On Tuesday night, Mr Davis denounced the fake documents. At the time, he said he had reported the matter to the US Embassy in Nassau which promised to investigate.

A US Embassy official later said the documents “do not appear to be authentic US government documents”.
