Challenges for the new government

EDITOR, The Tribune.

There are two critical and overwhelming issues which should be foremost for the new government and they are both interlinked.

Firstly due to the effect of the pandemic and the decimation of the economy new taxes will be needed immediately if the country is to stave off bankruptcy and to stop the IMF becoming the de facto government.

Secondly, the abysmal vaccination numbers have to go up drastically. The economy is driven primarily by tourism. If the Bahamas does NOT reach herd immunity every first world country will put the Bahamas on the no go list. This is wise governance by these countries.

Unfortunately due to shear ignorance and the power of the internet to spread misinformation a large percentage of our citizens believe quite wrongly that the vaccine is more dangerous than the actual disease – it’s absolute nonsense but it’s the case. The government has to get the numbers of vaccinated up significantly otherwise the economy will remain in the critical care unit along with our dying brothers and sisters.
