WITH schools being closed for the Easter holiday, Tony Crean and Sharon ‘the General’ Storr are combining their skills to host another basketball camp for high school students in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera.

The camp, which will begin on Saturday, will run for four days for students in grades 5-7 through Tuesday, April 12. From Wednesday to Saturday, April 13-16, the camp will cater to students in grade 8-12.

Daily sessions will be held from 9 am to 3 pm, except on Palm Sunday, April 10, when they will go from 2-5 pm.

Assisting Crean and Storr will be Renee ‘Sunshine’ Davis.

During the week-long session, Crean said they will be taught the art of shooting, dribbling, passing and footwork as well as playing offensively and defensively – everything, he said, that makes up a game.

The camp was originally staged in 2019, but Crean said because of the restrictions from COVID-19, they had to put it off for two years. However, he said they are eager to resume the camp this year.

“We want to reintroduce the game to the students in the aftermath of all that we went through with the lockdown from COVID- 19,” said Crean, a former long-time physical education teacher and sports executive in Eleuthera.

“There’s a lot of excitement down here for the camp.

“I know there was a boy whose parents were taking him away.

“He burst into tears because he wanted to stay for the camp. So there’s a lot of excitement down here.”

Crean said this is a good way to give the children some relief from the books and the computers that they had to endure over the past two years without much sporting activities because of the restrictions imposed by COVID-19.

“We want to get out in the fresh air so they can learn some basketball skills,” Crean said.

It’s anticipated that between 50-60 students will participate in the camp.

“I’m excited and looking forward to it,” Crean said.

“Storr and I and Sunshine are really close and we all love kids and so I’m hoping that together, we can get some good things out of this camp.”

Storr, a renowned national team player, coach and referee and Sweeting, a versatile softball player, have both worked for the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and are now working with the Games Secretariat for the return of the Bahamas Games during the country’s 50th anniversary of Independence in 2023.
