A 39-year-old who admitted to touching a teenage girl’s private parts last year was yesterday sentenced to one year in prison.

Matthew Butterfield, a security guard, was charged with indecent assault after he touched a 14-year-old girl’s vagina while she was at her aunt’s home on August 4 of last year.

Butterfield had initially denied the offence, but changed his plea to guilty during his second appearance before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

The prosecutor in the case said the child’s mother reported the incident to police shortly after it happened. She was also present in court during yesterday’s hearing.

When asked by Magistrate McKinney if the child had received therapy, the mother replied: “Not as yet. I have to make an appointment.”

As a result, Magistrate McKinney sentenced Butterfield to one year in prison and also placed him on two years probation or in default, one year in prison.

He was also ordered to pay $500 towards counselling for the child. Failure to do so would result in an additional six months behind bars.

Marvin Moss, 49, was also charged with indecent assault in a separate offence yesterday. Prosecutors allege Moss indecently assaulted a ten-year-old girl on February 10.

However, Moss denied the allegation and his matter was adjourned to February 18 for a bail hearing.
