A MAN was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services yesterday in connection with the death of an accused murderer.

Darius Cenel, 19, faced Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt on a charge of murder of 31-year-old Dwight “Whitey” Jones on June 29. Cenel faced an additional charge for the attempted murder of a woman on the same day.

The victim in this matter, Jones, was had been accused of the murder of Benjamin Anderson on February 7, 2017. Jones was alleged to have killed the man outside his home on Ida Street.

On June 29, police reports allege that Cenel, along with another male suspect, armed with a firearm approached Jones in his car on Pinedale Road in front of an apartment complex and opened fire on him. While Jones got out of his vehicle and briefly escaped his assailants, he was eventually gunned down in the back of a building near a chain link fence.

Jones would later be pronounced dead at the scene.

On the same day in a separate incident, the accused is alleged to have attempted to kill Janel Charles.

In court, due to the grave nature of the offence, Cenel was not required to enter a plea.

The accused was further informed that his case would proceed by way of Voluntary Bill of Indictment.

Although the accused was denied bail, he would be allowed to apply for it in the Supreme Court, where his trial will eventually be heard.

Until Cenel is granted bail, he will be sent back to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

Before being taken back into custody, the accused was allowed a brief moment with his family in court.

Cenel’s Voluntary Bill of Idictment is expected to be served in court on November 9.
