A 17-year-old male was fined $2,000 and placed on two years probation after admitting to a gun charge yesterday.

Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux charged the teenager,  whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, with possession of an unlicenced firearm and possession of ammunition.

The defendant was arrested by police in New Providence after they found him with a black Taurus 9mm pistol with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition on January 1.

After pleading guilty to the charge and accepting responsibility for his actions, the magistrate ordered him to pay a $2,000 fine. He must also be placed on a two-year probation period, during which time he is to complete 250 hours of community service.

Failure to obey any of these stipulations would result in the accused facing a two-year sentence at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
