Marlene Cant

Marlene Cant died in Princess Margaret Hospital on 13th September 2014.
She was born in Kingston, Jamaica, the daughter of Dr. Cecil Parkin and Mrs. Doreen Parkin, and she was a student of English Literature at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies. She completed her B.A in 1969 and her M.A. in 1972.
In July 1972 she married Richard Cant and she came to join him in The Bahamas in November 1972 while he was working for The Bahamas Land Resources Survey in many of the Family Islands.

In 1974 Marlene and Richard settled to live in Nassau, and Marlene started working at St. John’s College which was then located on Market Street. Marlene loved teaching English Language and Literature at St. John’s and she formed close bonds with many of her students. She left St. John’s in 1988 and then taught at R.M. Bailey, and eventually C. I. Gibson. Marlene had a strong passion for teaching Literature and dedicated much of her free time to providing students with extra sessions if they wanted them.
In 1997 Marlene had to retire from teaching for health reasons though she continued to help several students.
Marlene is survived by her husband: Richard Cant; her daughter: Shelley Cant Woodside and her son: Dominic Cant. She is also survived by her brother: David Parkin of Toowoomba, Australia, her son-in-law: Dan Woodside, her grandchildren: Amara and Hunter Woodside, many nieces and nephews and in-laws who reside in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the U.S.A. She leaves behind friends around the world and particularly the Bahamas.
Marlene will be cremated and her life celebrated in a small private ceremony when her close family is able to assemble in The Bahamas.
