Let your body catch up with your lifestyle

Before and after.

Health coach Ethan Quant, of Elite Wellness Solutions, has succeeded in his weight loss journey and now wants to share his methods with the Bahamas in an effort to foster a culture of wellness and conquer the obesity epidemic.

When I was well on my health and fitness journey there was this very awkward period of transition between where I was in my head and how my body looked in real life.

Here I was, doing all of the things that healthy and fit people did, but I still was fat and looked unhealthy. This was undoubtedly a rough part in my process. I remember going to restaurants and ordering a grilled chicken breast with a salad and the waitress would look at me in disbelief. Surely, a man of my stature would need something more filling, right? There were also other times that I would go out with friends and order a water as opposed to my regular Johnny Walker Black Label and ginger ale and I would be teased under the table.

At this time, it was so hard to navigate the road between where I was and where I wanted to be. And unfortunately, I didn’t have a health and lifestyle coach to help me figure that out.

This inner battle eventually led to me isolating myself. I stopped going out for drinks with friends. I stopped eating out at restaurants, and for the most part, I lost a large number of friends as a result of my lifestyle change. I would literally just work and train, devoid of any major social interaction. I did this for months. Then people started noticing. I remember walking into the gym and randomly was approached by a guy who complimented me on the good work I was doing.

Needless to say, I was surprised. Up to this point I didn’t think there was anything special to what I was doing. I saw myself as a regular guy at the gym churning out two-a-day workouts. Then again, how many “regular guys” are at the gym working out twice a day?

In hindsight, I remember having a tunnel-vision like focus on my goals. I literally spent four to six hours a day in the gym, weight training and doing cardio for months. I know that the majority of people can’t do that. And honestly, even if you can, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s really extreme and borderline unhealthy.

I was like a machine. I was very focused, perhaps even obsessed, with feeling better about myself. Funnily enough, I became so caught up in the process that I didn’t even realise when my body changed. Sure, I noticed that I was losing weight and seeing more toned muscle definition, but I didn’t notice when my body actually caught up to my lifestyle.

It wasn’t until I was talking to a friend that I was sending my progress pictures to that I realised the changes that were taking place in my body. Prior to that, I was really discouraged because every time I looked in the mirror I could not see any improvement. I was working so hard and eating all of the right stuff, and yet still, I felt so far from my goal. Then my friend suggested that I do a side-by-side comparison of my progress pictures. When I did, I was literally in shock at seeing my progress. My body was actually transforming right before my eyes. This was when I truly believed that I was really able to have the body I always dreamed of.
