WITH Grand Bahama’s economy in the doldrums, the last thing residents expected to happen was the cancellation of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival (BJC) in Freeport.

WITH stakeholders and participants still reeling from the news that Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival has been delayed, festival organisers announced on Tuesday that the event will also drop its Grand Bahama events.

THE postponement of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival has “blindsided” key stakeholders, with one travel company yesterday expressing disappointment and fear over potential damage to the event’s brand, as well as financial losses upwards of $25,000 as a result of the date change.
Carnival cost nearly $10m
FOUR months after Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival, officials from the Bahamas National Festival Commission have finally released key financial details surrounding the event, revealing the total cost was $9.8m with a government subsidy of $8.1m.
Weather may have hit turnout as Carnival attendance almost halves
AN estimated 16,000 people attended this year’s Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival in Grand Bahama, resulting in a significant decline compared to last year’s turnout of 30,000.
