Tribute to Zelma Dean

I received news recently about the sad demise of Zelma Dean. I was a colleague of Mrs Dean’s in the late 60s, when she was a maths teacher at Robinson Road School, through to the late 70s when the school became C H Reeves Junior High and Mrs Dean was the principal.

The US agency shaping all our future

ActivTrades

THE last four decades have been marked by exponential advances in technology, which, to a large extent, consisted of fine-tuning ideas that surfaced in the aftermath of World War II.

Story

Theatrics and consequences

Traditionally in Bahamian politics confrontation; demonstrations and protests have been employed to garner public sympathy and support for political parties; fringe groupings and ambitious individuals. This was the case way back in the days of the now fabled Burma Road spectacle and the events at the then Oakes Field Airport. The late Sir Clifford Darling; Charlie Rodrigues and my own father, the late Revered Doctor Ortland H Bodie Sr, et al, who was then a foreman at the Oakes Field Airport, to come to fame.

DIANE PHILLIPS: Along came Starbuck’s and nothing was ever the same again

The date March 31 passed two weeks ago with hardly anyone noticing, or maybe I missed the celebration and hoopla you might have expected on the 50th anniversary of a product that changed the culture. Starbuck’s turned 50 on that day and we are all a little poorer, a pound or two heavier and definitely more satiated for it.

Story

Empty paper bags?

IT’S been almost two months since the elevation of the Most Hon Philip ‘Brave’ Davis, QC, MP, as Prime Minister of our wonderful nation. The shock waves of this are still vibrating among those within the opposition and many so-called elites. Brave, in their unadulterated view was not prime ministerial material, whatever that is supposed to mean. Indeed, there were/are many within the PLP who never supported him or believed that he could stand in the political gap on behalf of the people of The Bahamas. Well, he is now doing it with aplomb and focused intensity.

Story

Do the right thing on Paradise Island

I am not a spear carrier for Toby Smith of the Paradise Lighthouse Company, but rather a Bahamian who is anxious to jump start the economy and getting as many fellow citizens to work in the shortest possible time frame. I do not subscribe to his public relations and coercive tactics in the least even if he and his advisors think that they are effective...more irritating than anything else. Facts on the ground:

Story

Davis is a man for all seasons

Many Bahamians often wonder about my politics. Some say that I am an FNM while others say that I would die the death of a thousand cuts to preserve and promote the Hon Philip ‘Brave’ Davis, QC, (PLP-Cat Island). Whatever my political preference maybe, there are a few members of the House of Assembly, whom I support regardless of party labels.

Legal blunders

It’s unfortunate that we have the burden of an Attorney General and his staff both of whom appear to be clueless and possibly inept.

Table the facts, Prime Minister

I recall so well pre-2017 election how the FNM swore blind an FNM Government would not follow down the road of past governments... theirs under leadership of Dr Hubert Minnis would be totally different...would uphold transparency in all they do. Four plus years later we knew that was just an election promise as HOA after HOA never saw the light of the day....never tabled in parliament and even one particular file ‘dat one gone missin’!

The House of Assembly

Our House of Assembly... over the past four-six years the practice and following of the so-called Westminster system has slowly but very surely been eroded — today every single MP, except Ministers, making a communication read off a script... the Rules says different - you may use notes.

Looking ahead for 2021

We made it into 2021. Thanks be unto The Lord Jesus Christ. 2020 is now behind us and as we probe this New Year, there is much to be thankful for despite the ongoing ravages of the pandemic and the anemic economy. We Bahamians often play the fool but we are a resilient and determined breed of people.
