To vaccinate or not?

The salient question that is now foremost in most Bahamians and residents minds is: “Do I voluntarily take the recommended vaccine and just how safe is it?” During the past two weeks I have been polling listeners on my radio talk show: ExpressYourself @ 99.5 FM on exactly that same question. So far, in excess of 75% of the responders stated that under No Circumstances, except mandated by the law, would they be injected with the vaccine, Astrazeneca, now available in limited quantities in The Bahamas.

Story

Davis and international participation

Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis, MP, QC, is to be commended on the energetic and focused style of leadership that he has demonstrated from his first early days in office.

Story

Recalcitrant lawyers

Many years ago, I was disbarred for a gross act of malfeasance – commingling a client’s funds with my own. This is what lawyers call it but it is pure and simple the unauthorised use of a client’s money. In the real world it is called stealing, but not with the intent to deprive the client permanently of his/her funds. Lawyers do this as a matter of routine, especially when there is a slow down in the economy. I am talking about lawyers across the board, regardless of race; colour or creed.

Story

A landslide win for PLP

The Bahamian people have spoken and have elected the PLP, led by the incoming Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip 'Brave' Davis, QC (PLP Cat Island), by a landslide. This is no time for gloating. The heavy lifting is now about to begin. Brave will be well advised to hit the ground running on behalf of a trusting populace. In the weeks and months ahead he and his administration will have two immediate tasks: get the pandemic under control as much as humanly possible and to build back our economy better than before.

Story

The Beaches and Parks Commission

This week in the House of Assembly charges were made that the former Chairman of the Beaches & Parks Commission and his team may have spread around assorted contracts in the months and weeks leading up to the general elections.

Story

Behold the power of money

Three years ago, I was recruited by Island Television to host a radio/television show. I was the “darling” of the owners of that particular entity, or so I thought. Lo and behold I made certain references to the PM and a particular attorney-at-law. Within hours I was ordered to apologise to both of them. Needless to say I refused and I was summarily dismissed.

Story

The Minnis era of the FNM

Shortly after becoming leader of the once respected and revered FNM, the Hon Hubert A Minnis (FNM-Killarney) publicly and politically stabbed the former Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Hubert A Ingraham frontally by declaring that the Ingraham Era was over. He thought, I am sure, that he was playing cute and dismissive.

Story

Why be thankful?

This week Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving in the USA as a national holiday. Traditionally it is a day when they celebrate and thank God or whichever deity that they worship. They celebrate the birth of the USA way back in 1776 and spend time with immediate family and close friends. There is usually an uptick in travelling by air, car or rail to different parts of that country. It is also a magnet for sales and giveaways by stores and other commercial outlets.

Story

Bring back Dr Sands as Health Minister

It is now clear that the Minnis administration has no real plan based on science to combat and reduce the surging rates of infection and possibly deaths. Whatever plans it has it would appear to be based on politics and not science. The Emergency Powers Act confers almost dictatorial powers within the hands of the Competent Authority, who has emerged as Dr Minnis and not the collective cabinet, at least that is the optics. With elections being just around the corner political considerations are first and foremost.

Story

Thanks for holding it together

Shortly after the great hurricane Dorian, The Bahamas found itself struggling to deal with an even greater catastrophe brought by COVID-19 – a once in a lifetime pandemic.

Story

Fake polls and reality

We the people gave Minnis and the then opposition FNM a massive victory in May, 2017. We were allured by the many, now bogus, promises made by them plus we were dead tired of brother Christie. Since being elected it is to be admitted that back-to-back events, the hurricanes and now the ongoing pandemic created grave difficulties for the incoming government. It is how it reacted to and dealt with the effects that has now turned many Bahamians off with the PM and his halting administration.

Baseball tournament brings economic boost to Grand Bahama

Grand Bahama received hosted a world-class international youth baseball tournament from December 17 until yesterday.

Story

Heritage sites

Much has been said and no doubt will be said about a group of Bahamians seeking a contract from the FNM administration to manage some of our cultural and heritage sites. The current chairman of the FNM, Charles Culmer, has rightfully admitted that he is a part of such grouping along with others, inclusive of FNM and PLP supporters, et al. Such sites would include the forts; the Queen’s Staircase and other sites.

Story

Home ports, tourism and recovery

The one single brightest light in The Bahamas recently is the announcement by Crystal Cruise Lines that it intends to make the Prince George Wharf its home port. I understand that there are other cruise lines which are also considering doing the same. This is a fantastic piece of good news, for a change, and pardon the pun but like noted realtor and businessman, Mr Mario Carey stated the other day, this is a potential “game changer” for our tourism industry and the second home market.

Facing great expectations

Now that the PLP and the Hon Philip ‘Brave’ Davis, QC, are in charge of the administration of our wonderful nation, there are great expectations on the part of our people. We live in instant society and we tend to expect advances and corrections immediately, regardless of the circumstances. Yes, electoral promises would have been made and we fully expect that they will be delivered on. We have to, however, be realistic.

Story

Unite the nation with appointments

As the newly installed Prime Minister, the Most Hon Philip “Brave” Davis, QC (PLP-Cat Island) fleshed out his administration, I would hope that several appointments be made to reflect national unity and continued nation building and reconstruction. The Urban Renewal Commission, as then led by the Hon Cynthia ‘Mother’ Pratt and the Hon Algernon SPB Allen, was an excellent and highly effective community tool for the then administration to directly impact the lives and housing conditions of thousands of Bahamians, especially in the inner city areas of New Providence and Grand Bahama.

Story

Bahamas morning

The long nightmare which Bahamians endured for a little over four years is, mercifully, at an end with the election of the Davis administration two months ago. The draconian responses to the arrival of the pandemic and reaction to the devastation of Dorian pushed Minnis and his people them straight over the cliff, even if they gratuitously carried thousands of the unwashed masses with them.
