Honestman 8 years, 3 months ago on Ex-Chamber chief slams ‘outrageous’ late tax penalties

If government is going to be so strict on VAT payments then why does it not take the same approach with unpaid Property Taxes? Oh wait, that would upset too many PLP friends and family that are thousands in arrears!

Publius 8 years ago on 'Petty' Minnis blasted by Cash over committee changes

“While I have not received any confirmation to that effect from the ‘leader’ it would not surprise me if he did such a thing.

Then why are you issuing a statement to the media on something you say you do not even know is true? These FNMs, regardless of the side they are on, simply will not stop. How hard is it for Cash to get confirmation from Minnis on this and handle the matter internally? This is not the public's business or concern. We have no say in who parties put on their internal committees and those choices have no baring on public policy or public life, so why run to the public with these internal party matters? It's no wonder that Bahamians throughout this country are disgusted with these parties to the extent of not being interested in voting at all.

Superior results? Only the vote of the delegates can determine what results any of these contenders have. These contenders are behaving as though this is a general election that they are competing in.

would-be coup

And I wish to the heavens that today's reporters had some actual knowledge of their country and its Constitution. Votes of no confidence are foundational democratic organs and one of the highest methods of accountability within the legislature and the executive in our system. Do these reporters even know what a coup is? Our educational system, politics and the media - the unholy trinity in dumbing down the population.

observer2 8 years ago on Sir Franklyn: Bahamas is ‘in very dangerous spot’

This is an excellent time to invest hard earned money into the Bahamian economy. With VAT, increased business license fees, increased national insurance rates, BEC distroying all of your equipment, Baha Mar shut down, Moody's threatening to down grad use to junk, opposition fighting amongst themselves like a bunch of children, D average workers, lack of internal controls at Post Office Bank, money missing from Road Traffic, pot hole filled roads, foreigners buying up the family islands, government increased fees on bank transfers, VAT on international services to financial firms, I could go on and on.

Cable Bahamas is over leveraged with hundreds of millions in debt. Facebook the owner of WhatsApp is putting cell phones calls out of business with 100 million new Customers each month covering one sixths of earths populations. Cell phones will be obsolete in 5 years. Smart devices will rule.

So let's follow the recommendations of Sir Frankie and invest in the Bahamas.

General Allyson Maynard-Gibson, QC, said there is no need for concern, adding that Bahamians should “trust” that negotiations are being handled by the “capable hands” of Prime Minister Perry Christie.

I don't think they get it, the fact is we don't believe he's capable of developing or executing any strategy to lead the Bahamas into the future. Based on past experience, BTC, BAMSI, PHA, BOB, NHI, Blackbeard's Cay, Nygard Cay, Bahamar, gaming referendum, we believe we have been sold out once again.

I hope you reflect your pseudo-name and are speaking for Greece ........ this country would have been doomed without the education, work ethic, business acumen, patriotism and creative genius of Long Islanders ........ we do not sit down and wait for welfare and hand-outs from government like 80% of other Bahamians ......... that is why we are mis-understood

justthefactsplease 7 years, 8 months ago on Bran pledges ‘15% spend’ fiscal rule

It is obvious that you do not understand the concept. As it is now, the year over year is way above 15%...especially this election year...so by capping it at 15% you would reduce borrowing and force more fiscal responsibility from our leaders, which is exactly what this country needs.

banker 7 years, 7 months ago on UPDATED - Sacked: 61 jobs go at Ocean Club

There seems to be a real sense of entitlement among the unions and workers. Contrary to the real business world, they think that having a job means a forever pay cheque, even in businesses that have a low quotient of human capital -- unskilled labour. This used to be the case years and years ago, but that doesn't reflect the modern business reality of today.

Once upon a time, if you had more than a couple of jobs on your resume, you were deemed flighty and not a good risk for staying at your job. If you got a job with say the telephone company, that would be the last job that you would ever need, and you retired with a pension. With today's economy and today's reality, that is not the case anymore, in the Bahamas or elsewhere.

The only workers that are really safe in today's reality, are the educated and the professionals. Middle class jobs are fleeting, and that is why Donald Trump was elected president in the US. People want a return to job security which doesn't exist any more.

It is no consolation to the terminated employees of course, but it is the new reality.

MonkeeDoo 7 years, 7 months ago on Hubert Minnis faces removal as Leader of Opposition in Parliament

Tal, you don't know Jack Shit about nothing. The speaker does not decide anything like this. If you want to point something out to the people here then consider that Perry Christie has LOST two Referenda and sat his scrubby ass in the House as Prime Minister. On the other hand David Cameron lost one referendum and resigned his position, followed by his seat. The Italian Prrime Minister Matteo Renzi lost his referendum and stated up front that if he lost he would resign and he has done that. These are countries with civilized traditions and they make this country all the more just a Banana Republic. Shameful. And you want to write nonsense here.

Publius 7 years, 7 months ago on Do you agree with Edison Key that FNM leader Dr Hubert Minnis should resign?

In a mature democracy any house leader who has lost the support of his colleagues would have stepped down. But of course, the Bahamas is not a mature democracy and the politicians are, with few exceptions, barnacles clinging to and weighing down our ship of life.

The problem is Bahamians want to cling to the past, because they have found ways to corrupt the warn out colonial institutions. They are frightened of change, because they might not have the same influence and control. Screw that!!! Time for change. Time for new.
